Au Revoir: A Vintage Blackletter Font for Bold Branding and Campaign Visuals

Au Revoir for Wedding Invitations and Elegant Branding

As a social media strategist working on a boutique wedding planner’s campaign, I needed a font that felt timeless yet modern. Au Revoir, a vintage blackletter font, immediately stood out. Its ornate strokes and calligraphic flair gave the brand an air of sophistication without leaning too medieval. I used it on Instagram story templates and Pinterest pins for a seasonal bridal collection, pairing it with soft ivory backgrounds and gold accents. The result was a visual tone that felt both romantic and editorial—perfect for a luxury wedding niche.

How Au Revoir Elevates Magazine Covers and Product Packaging

In a recent product launch for a small-batch candle brand, I used Au Revoir as the main header on their packaging mockups and digital magazine cover submissions. The font’s strong contrast and dramatic serifs made it ideal for print-based design where visual impact matters more than readability at small sizes. It worked especially well on dark backgrounds, where its intricate details really popped. As a blackletter font, Au Revoir brings a sense of craftsmanship and heritage—ideal for artisanal or premium product lines.

Using Au Revoir in Social Media Graphics and YouTube Thumbnails

When designing a set of YouTube thumbnails for a historical fiction book launch, I wanted the titles to feel cinematic and bold. Au Revoir’s dramatic letterforms translated well into thumbnail text, especially when used as a short title overlay on a textured parchment background. The font’s visual weight helped the text stand out in fast-scrolling feeds. I made sure to keep the message short—using it only for headlines or taglines—and paired it with a clean sans serif for supporting text. This helped maintain readability while still delivering a strong visual hook.

Font Pairing Tips: How to Use Au Revoir with Other Typefaces

One of the most important aspects of using a decorative font like Au Revoir is knowing how to pair it with more legible typefaces. In a recent email campaign for a vintage fashion brand, I used Au Revoir for the subject line teaser and then switched to a modern sans serif like Montserrat for the body copy. This contrast helped guide the viewer’s eye while keeping the overall design cohesive. For editorial layouts, I’ve successfully paired Au Revoir with serif fonts like Playfair Display to maintain a classic tone across headers and subheaders.

When to Use Au Revoir—and When to Avoid It

Au Revoir shines in short, impactful text like logos, titles, and promotional callouts. However, it’s not ideal for long-form content or small-size digital text. During a recent webinar banner design, I tested Au Revoir in a mobile preview and found that the ornate details became distracting when scaled down. I ended up using it only for the event name and switched to a simpler font for the date and speaker name. It’s also not the best choice for formal corporate branding or minimalist design styles, where clarity and simplicity are key.
